Improve your broadband experience
How to improve your broadband experience, test your speed and tips on how to improve your WiFi.
What speed should I expect from my LTE (4G) or 5G Broadband connection?

Your plan may have a speed tier or a maximum line speed, but your actual speed will always depend on where you are and what broadband technology you‘re connected to.

Find out more about Telkom LTE and 5G plans and speeds here www.telkom.co.za

We can’t predict your maximum achievable speed until your service is up and running. If your home internet is connected, you can test your broadband speed by visiting www.speedtest.net and please stand right near to the Router when you run these tests to rule our poor Wi-Fi signal.

Check the strength of your Wi-Fi signal

Your actual Wi-Fi signal can dramatically affect the speed of the internet connection in a few ways, namely:

1. You are too far away from the 4G/5G router and therefore Wi-Fi signal is weak.

2. There may be too many walls between you and the 4G/5G router.

3. There may be too many Wi-Fi devices connected to the 4G/5G router creating a congested Wi-Fi environment.

4. The strength of your Wi-Fi signal can be affected by where you place your modem.

Smart devices
Think about the following:

• Physical barriers like metal, wood, concrete walls, or water – between the modem and your devices.

• Interference from other devices – like microwaves, cordless phones and baby monitors, phones and other Wi-Fi devices that are connected to the Router.

• The distance between the modem and your devices.

Smart devices
Multiple devices

Your broadband is shared between all the connected devices in your home. The number of devices and how much data each is using can also affect the speed of the service.

To help find out what’s slowing down your Wi-Fi:

• Switch off unnecessary or data-hungry devices that you’re not using

• Switch off each device one at a time and see if the connection speed increases noticeably. If it does, then check if that device is using a large amount of data or has any viruses.

Smart devices
Connection is slow on one device only

If your connection is slow on one device only, it may be infected with malware or a virus. Or your device might be too old to support higher speeds.

To find out if your device is slowing down your connection:

• Use a different and/ or newer device to perform the same action – and see if your connection improves. If it does, get your original device checked for malware or viruses. If it’s old, consider retiring it.

Old modem

The quality and age of your modem will affect your connection.

You could upgrade to one of the latest Telkom-approved modems. We recommend using a current model Router to maximize broadband performance. You can buy a new Router by visiting one of Telkom`s many stores.

Still not working?

If you’ve tried the steps above and you’re still having issues, here are a few more tips:

• You might need to purchase a Wi-Fi MESH device to extend your Wi-Fi signal strength and coverage in your home or office

• Try to place the 4G/5G Router near a window and test the connection speed in different rooms to ascertain which room allows for the best signal and connection to the Telkom network

• Call our support team and log a support query relating to your issue being experienced.
